Many times I have said in my reviews how I’m sick of Beethoven but it was always to be understood that I never meant the quartets, of course. In a way, they are much like the legendary Budapest String Quartet of the 1930s and `40s; and, if any readers of this review have done research, they will discover that Budapest's Beethoven and Mozart quartets, when they first appeared, elicited strong reactions that are remarkably similar to what Emerson has received here. I loved them then and I love them even more in their CD incarnation, which adds transparency and bite to sound that always was clear and impactful.
