Spirituality plays a significant role in 12-step recovery programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, according to an article in the Journal of Religious Health. ; Purpose: Meaningful daily routines such as school, work, family, and community participation are important during the recovery process and for maintaining wellness. Spirituality has received increased attention in the psychiatric literature; however, it remains underexplored on a global level. The central idea of these programs is that a person’s recovery can begin when they let go of a perceived sense of control over their life. We must move beyond our ambivalence about including spirituality in mental health programs if we intend to provide holistic, culturally competent, and recovery-oriented services.
