Think of Acer’s Swift 7 as a tablet with an embedded keyboard and an attached display, and you'll  better understand its strengths and weaknesses. Fine details are plenty sharp, and the brightness and contrast are both high. Bravo! It’s all protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6. Even the faster Core i7-8565U systems here are far off the pace of real gaming rigs with dedicated graphics. After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. The Acer Swift 7 (July 2019) improves over the earlier model, though not by that much. The test generates a proprietary numeric score; higher numbers are better. It's not the best value or the best performer in the ultraportable arena, but it's the sleekest status symbol. ), The company says a special oxidation process gives the black beauty a ceramic-like surface. We like the addition of Thunderbolt 3 capabilities to the USB-C ports, compared to the previous Swift 7. Acer extended the trackpad across a sizeable portion of the keyboard—it’s nearly 6 inches wide! Ultraportables are strictly for casual and browser-based games, not the latest titles, and the Swift 7 is no exception. It's no Retina-level display. The Swift 7 doesn’t include a Windows Hello-enabled webcam—honestly, it barely provides a webcam at all. Though the quality of a fingerprint scanner usually degrades somewhat over time, as gunk builds up on the sensor, the relatively new Swift 7 worked just fine to log me in quickly and accurately over the week or so I tested it. But its screen's not bad, it's at least half a pound lighter than anything in its class, and its ultrathin design is simply stunning. While letting a video-on-demand briefing stew within Microsoft Edge, the Swift 7 grew quite hot on the underside, and unpleasantly hot on the top, especially the top right corner, as seen below. (That said, I noticed its right front underside grew warm during our strenuous benchmark tests.). According to our thermal camera, the Swift 7’s heat pipe dumps out most of the heat into the upper right-hand corner, at about 122 degrees. Acer Swift 7 SF714-52T Review: Slim and light subnotebook for a fat wallet 890 grams (~1.96 lb). For all of the attention Acer paid to improving the Swift 7 elsewhere, it’s hard to believe its design team flubbed this aspect so badly. You can see the contenders' basic specs below. The power button to the left of the Escape key doubles as a Windows Hello fingerprint reader, so you can switch on and sign into the system with one press. In total, I counted 23 additional apps that aren’t part of Windows proper, including two apps to download more apps (App Explorer and the Acer Collection S). PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a Storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the boot drive. Acer doesn’t really try that hard with audio enhancement, as the bare-bones Acer TrueHarmony controls are buried within the Realtek Audio Console app in the Windows 10 Settings. We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. In a sense, it almost doesn't compete with more conventional systems—it's a fashion and engineering exercise that will be irresistible to some, impractical to others. On the right side of the chassis are two Thunderbolt ports, new for the July 2019 edition of the Acer Swift 7. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to laptops and midrange PCs, while Fire Strike is more demanding and made for high-end PCs to strut their stuff. It also glides and taps smoothly. This is what the Webcam sees: giant fingers, a mouth, and whatever you spilled on your shirt at lunch. Sure, it's expensive considering its tepid performance. The SIM slot for mobile broadband found in last year's Swift 7 has gone away, and there's no SD or microSD card slot. Therefore, on occasion, certain elements of a webpage or app menu weren’t clickable unless the window was resized on the screen. The latest Swift 7 now includes a clickable precision touchpad, unlike the truly horrendous touchpad of a generation ago. Next up is another synthetic graphics test, this time from Unigine Corp. Like 3DMark, the Superposition test renders and pans through a detailed 3D scene and measures how the system copes. The left side of the Acer Swift 7 (July 2019) chassis doesn’t have much more than a headphone jack and power button. If you have an SD or microSD card you want to insert into the Swift 7, you’ll need another hub: What Acer supplies is pretty bare-bones. Its pixel count is an easy-on-the-eyes match for its size, and its viewing angles are broad. At 1080p, 30 frames per second might as well be on the far side of the moon for these laptops on this test. Our updated Swift 7 (July 2019) review reflects how Acer solved those problems, though others remain: a poor webcam, mediocre performance, and a somewhat worrying amount of heat. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet work, web browsing, and videoconferencing. Formerly editor-in-chief of Home Office Computing, Eric Grevstad is a contributing editor for PCMag, where he earlier served as lead laptop analyst. In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel—with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system conks out. Two Thunderbolt 3 ports, plus HDMI/USB dongle. The Acer Swift 7 (July 2019) is about as thin as the Google Pixel 3 smartphone (right). But again, it's not like it lags behind when I'm typing or switching among app windows. While it’s never totally clear which apps Microsoft includes as part of Windows, and which are placed there by the OEM, the Swift 7 likely offers more than you'd reasonably need: Amazon, Booking.com, the two Candy Crush games, eBay, Evernote, Firefox, Hearts Deluxe, and Spades, to name just a few. Supplementary functions, like the ability to turn off the touchpad or turn the backlighting off and on, are reserved for the second row. It's no speed demon and the webcam is subpar, but the Acer Swift 7 is the slimmest and lightest 14-inch ultraportable we've seen—an under-2-pound fashion statement that will tempt elite travelers. As for year-over-year improvements, the new model has a faster CPU, twice the memory and storage, and Thunderbolt 3-enabled instead of vanilla USB Type-C ports at the same price. Using Intel’s XTU test, we watched the Core i7-8500Y CPU inside the Swift 7 struggle to break to 2GHz using our prolonged Handbrake stress test, settling down to about 1.79GHz over time. We care far less about how thin it actually is, however, as it begs the question: Is a thin laptop a flimsy laptop? 3DMark measures relative graphics muscle by rendering sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting. The Swift 7 (July 2019) responds: Yes and no. Speaker quality still suffers from the Swift 7’s ultraportability, however. (We’ve highlighted the Swift 7 (July 2019) in red, and the earlier Swift 7 in orange, to facilitiate generation-over-generation comparisons.).
